STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE "Call to Arms" TEASER FADE IN: 1 INT. QUARK'S - SECOND LEVEL A low angle shot of ROM and LEETA, deep in thought as they study something below the screen. ROM What do you think? LEETA (less than thrilled) I don't know. What do you think? ROM (smiling) I like it. 2 NEW ANGLE To reveal that Rom and Leeta are leaning over the table staring down at a large PADD which displays a fashion sketch of a Bajoran woman in a very skimpy wedding dress. Well, almost a dress. Kind of a negligee, but with less fabric. GARAK and ZIYAL are seated across from Rom and Leeta, awaiting the verdict of the bride-to-be. ROM Don't you? LEETA Rom, it's two handkerchiefs and a loincloth. ROM I suppose we could lose the handkerchiefs. LEETA Ferengi tradition or no Ferengi tradition, I am not going to be naked at my wedding. ROM Who said anything about naked? You'll still have the loincloth. Leeta shoves the PADD over to Garak. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - TEASER 2. 2 CONTINUED: LEETA Please show us something else. GARAK There is nothing else. I've shown you a hundred and fifty-three different wedding dresses, from Tellerite modern to... (indicates the current dress) Risian traditional. And you've hated them all. LEETA I liked number thirty-eight. ROM Number thirty-eight? It had more layers than a Baduvian tapestry. LEETA It was elegant. ROM It was bulky. ZIYAL I like sixty-four. Rom and Leeta both make faces. LEETA Sixty-four? ROM Eeeesh. GARAK At least they agree on something. ZIYAL Why don't you just let Garak design a dress on his own? You know whatever he comes up with will be beautiful. GARAK My dear, I find your blind adoration both flattering and disturbing. (to Rom and Leeta) But she does have a point. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - TEASER 3. 2 CONTINUED: (2) Before Rom and Leeta can respond to Ziyal's suggestion, QUARK comes storming up the stairs. QUARK Leeta. That fifteen minute break you asked for was up an hour ago. ROM Brother, what do you think of this dress? Rom shows Quark the PADD with the skimpy dress, but Quark averts his eyes. QUARK I don't want to think about it. All I know is that any marriage where the female's allowed to speak and wear clothing is doomed to failure. (to Leeta) Your dabo table awaits. But something catches Leeta's attention just off screen. LEETA There he is. Everyone looks out at the Promenade, where SISKO is walking with CHIEF O'BRIEN. LEETA Let's talk to him. ROM Now? LEETA Now, Rom. 3 ANGLE ON SISKO AND O'BRIEN As they walk along the Second Level. SISKO Try to look on the bright side, Chief. It won't be forever. O'BRIEN I know. And I understand why you ordered all the children off the station. Keiko and the kids will be a lot safer on Earth than here. But they've only been gone two days and I miss them already. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - TEASER 4. 3 CONTINUED: SISKO I still feel better knowing they're out of harm's way. I just wish I could talk Jake into visiting Earth for a while. Just then, Rom and Leeta approach Sisko. LEETA Captain, can we speak to you for a moment? ROM If you're not too busy. SISKO Go ahead. ROM Would you marry me? I mean us? I mean, would you perform our wedding ceremony? LEETA It would be a great honor to be married by the Emissary. ROM It's not for another two weeks. So you'd have plenty of time to get ready. SISKO (smiling) I'll start brushing up on my Bajoran. ROM Me too. As Sisko is talking to Rom and Leeta, a crowd begins to gather by the windows. It's a mixture of Federation, Bajoran and Klingon personnel. Their mood is somber and quiet. O'BRIEN Captain. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - TEASER 5. 3 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO (to Rom and Leeta) If you'll excuse me. Sisko steps over to the window and joins O'Brien. 4 NEW ANGLE (OPTICAL) On Sisko, O'Brien, and the others, including Rom and Leeta. They stand there for a beat, looking out at the stars and waiting. O'BRIEN Maybe they're not coming. SISKO That would be a nice surprise. Just then, the wormhole opens outside the window. CUT TO: 5 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) As a convoy of Dominion ships emerges from the wormhole. 6 INT. PROMENADE - SECOND LEVEL (OPTICAL) Sisko and O'Brien watch the Dominion ships disappear, their expressions grim. SISKO (disappointed) I'll say one thing for the Dominion, they're punctual. O'BRIEN That's the fifth convoy headed to Cardassia in the last five weeks. I can only imagine how many Jem'Hadar soldiers they have stationed there by now. SISKO Too many. O'BRIEN Sometimes I wish they'd just attack and get it over with. SISKO I have a feeling you're going to get your wish. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - TEASER 5A. 6 CONTINUED: Sisko and O'Brien stare out the window as the Dominion ships continue to pour into the Alpha Quadrant. They know, sooner or later, they'll be facing those ships in combat. FADE OUT. END OF TEASER DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 6. ACT ONE FADE IN: (NOTE: Episode credits fall over opening scenes) 7 INT. SISKO'S QUARTERS JAKE sits down at the table, which is set for dinner. Sisko is at the cooking table. JAKE Thanks for the invite, Dad. I haven't had a home-cooked meal since... SISKO Since the last time you were here. JAKE Sounds about right. So, what's for dinner? Sisko places a PADD on Jake's place. Jake looks down at it. JAKE (deadpan) Can I have some salsa with that? SISKO Read the headline. JAKE "Bajorans Continue Negotiations with the Dominion." SISKO Go on. JAKE "Station Commander Opposes Non- aggression Pact." SISKO And the byline. JAKE By Jake Sisko. Sisko serves the actual meal and sits down. SISKO You should've warned me. JAKE I was waiting for the right moment. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 7. 7 CONTINUED: SISKO The right moment would've been before you published the article. JAKE I know. I'm sorry. (a beat, spin-doctoring) But aren't you glad I got a job? SISKO You mean this isn't a one-time thing? JAKE Nope. I'm now an official correspondent for the Federation News Service. SISKO What about your novel? JAKE I'm not giving up on it. But this way I get to see my work in print. SISKO And apparently, I get to see everything I say in print too. JAKE You're a public figure, Dad. You're the captain of the most important space station in the entire Federation. You're news. SISKO Don't remind me. (resigned) I guess I can't stop you from doing your job. JAKE Can I quote you on that? Sisko stares at Jake. He's not getting any more quotes today. JAKE I guess not. 8 INT. CARGO BAY DAX and KIRA are walking through the bay checking crates of cargo. ODO, having just brought them some information, is waiting for a response. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 8. 8 CONTINUED: Odo and Kira are not looking very comfortable around one another. Obviously, there's been some fallout from the events seen in "CHILDREN OF TIME." KIRA Yamok sauce? Who'd bother to smuggle in ten thousand wrappages of Cardassian yamok sauce? Almost instantly it comes clear to all three of them. KIRA Quark. That little worm. He thinks the Cardassians are going to retake the station. DAX He's a Ferengi. You can't blame him for hedging his bets. (to herself) But that is a lot of yamok sauce. (to Kira and Odo) What exactly is a yamok, anyway? ODO What would you like me to do with it? Dax looks to Kira. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 9. 8 CONTINUED: (2) DAX Major? KIRA (to Dax) I don't care. You decide. DAX (to Odo) Dump it. ODO Very good. Odo nods and EXITS. 9 CLOSE ON DAX AND KIRA Dax studies her friend as Kira continues along checking more of the crates. DAX You mind telling me what's going on? KIRA What do you mean? DAX You and Odo. You've been avoiding each other for weeks. KIRA It's a long story. DAX Those are the best kind. Kira stops and turns to Dax. She's torn. She wants to get this off her chest, but it's not easy. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 10. 9 CONTINUED: Kira takes a long beat, then decides to plunge ahead. KIRA Odo... has... feelings for me. DAX What kind of feelings? KIRA The kind that aren't easy to talk about. DAX Since when? KIRA I don't know. Years. I just found out about it last month. DAX That explains a lot. KIRA (surprised) It does? DAX Not really. It just seemed like the right thing to say. I had no idea. KIRA Neither did I. Kira's not sure that talking to Dax was such a good idea after all. 10 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 11. 11 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Close on a coffee cup being set on Sisko's desk. Pull back to reveal Sisko behind his desk and NOG presenting him with his morning beverage. NOG Sixty degrees Celsius. Just the way you like it. Sisko takes a sip. Nog starts to leave, then... NOG Sir? Is it true? What they're saying about the Romulans? SISKO What about them? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 12. 11 CONTINUED: NOG There were some Orion Free Traders in Quark's last night, and they said they'd heard from a Vulcan diplomat that the Romulans had signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion. SISKO A lot of rumors float around at a time like this, cadet. Just don't forget the one hundred and ninetieth Rule of Acquisition. NOG "Hear all; trust nothing." Good advice, sir. Nog EXITS. 12 CLOSE ON SISKO As he picks up his baseball and absentmindedly turns it in his hand. SISKO (to himself) The Romulans? After a beat, Sisko speaks into the air. SISKO Sisko to Dax. DAX'S COM VOICE Dax here. SISKO Put me through to Starfleet Intelligence. 13 INT. WARDROOM Sisko has called a meeting of the senior staff. WORF, Dax, BASHIR, O'Brien, Kira and Odo are all present. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 13. 13 CONTINUED: Worf is furious. He slams the table. WORF The Romulans. I always knew they were without honor. Now they have proven it. BASHIR When did they sign the treaty? SISKO Yesterday. O'BRIEN They must be pretty desperate to side with the Dominion. SISKO Technically they're not siding with anyone. It's a non- aggression pact. KIRA Meaning if the Dominion does attack, they're going to sit by and do nothing. ODO The Romulans, the Miradorn, the Tholians. The Dominion's making impressive inroads in the Alpha Quadrant. DAX And the Bajorans are still talking to them. KIRA My people will never sign that treaty. Or any other agreement with the Dominion. O'BRIEN Meanwhile, more Jem'Hadar ships are coming through the wormhole every week. WORF It must stop. Sisko nods in agreement. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT ONE 14. 13 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO It's going to stop. (a beat) I've talked to Starfleet Command. And they've agreed that no more Dominion ships can be allowed into the Alpha Quadrant. O'BRIEN How do we keep them out? SISKO We're going to mine the entrance to the wormhole. Prevent the Dominion from bringing any more reinforcements to Cardassia. Sisko pauses for a beat to that sink in. ODO If we try to stop those convoys, it may very well start a war. SISKO Maybe so. But one thing's for certain. We're losing the peace. Which means a war could be our only hope. And off this grim possibility, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT ONE DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 15. ACT TWO FADE IN: 14 INT. DAX'S QUARTERS Dax, O'Brien and Rom are sitting around a table spread with food, drink and five or six different PADDS. They're discussing the minefield, but, since Dax is running things, the atmosphere is informal. Think the Manhattan Project, a group of scientists and engineers getting together to solve a problem, where the physics are more important than winning the war. O'BRIEN What about pulse mines? We could equip them with variable geometry detonators. DAX Not good enough. The Dominion ships could just wait at the mouth of the wormhole and pick them off one by one. O'BRIEN What if we cloaked them? DAX Cloaks don't always work against the Dominion. O'BRIEN Maybe cloaked ships don't, but I'm thinking a lot smaller. Each mine no more than a meter across. DAX A mine that small wouldn't have much power. It would take dozens of them to disable a warship. We'd run out of mines before they ran out of ships. Dax looks over at Rom. DAX Rom, are you here? ROM Cloak. Small. Dozens. I heard every word. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 16. 14 CONTINUED: O'BRIEN Well something's wrong. You haven't touched your food. ROM It's my stomach. Ever since Captain Sisko agreed to officiate at our wedding, I haven't had much of an appetite. O'BRIEN I thought you wanted Captain Sisko to marry you. ROM I did. But now that he's said yes, it's become so... real. (terrified) I'm going to get married. DAX Not for another two weeks. And in the meantime, we've got work to do. ROM But what if Leeta turns out to be just like Nog's mother? What if I can't make her happy? What if this is the biggest mistake of my life? What if... O'Brien doesn't have much patience for Rom's anxieties. O'BRIEN Rom. ROM Self-replication! That's the only answer. DAX Self-replication? ROM If the mines are going to be small, we'll need a lot of them. And we'll need a way to replace them quickly if the Jem'Hadar try to blast their way through. And... (still panicking) Uh-oh. I forgot to request new quarters. Mine are too small. Where are Leeta and I going to live? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 17. 14 CONTINUED: (2) DAX Rom, I think you're on to something. ROM I know I am. I've measured them three times. There's nowhere to put her prayer mandala. O'BRIEN (to Dax) We could equip each mine with a replicator unit. DAX No matter how many the Jem'Hadar destroy, there'll always be more. O'BRIEN We'll program them to swarm detonate. Twenty or thirty mines for each ship. ROM The only problem is you'll have to wait until the entire minefield is deployed before you activate it. Otherwise the proximity sensors c ould cause premature detonation. (freaking) Where's Leeta going to put all her clothes? (a wail of torment) I don't have enough closet space. DAX I'd better go talk to Sisko. O'BRIEN I'll go draw up some specs. They both look to Rom to see what he's going to do. ROM I've got to go to waste extraction. And with that, Rom rushes out of the room. 14A INT. OPS A thoughtful Sisko ENTERS from his office. WORF and Kira meet him at the top of the stairs. DEEP-SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 17A. 14A CONTINUED: KIRA So, what did Starfleet Command say? WORF How many reinforcements will they be sending us? KIRA And how soon will they get here? SISKO We're not getting any reinforcements. We'll have to make due with what we've got. This comes as an unwelcome surprise to both Kira and Worf. KIRA What we've got isn't enough. WORF Sir, as Strategic Operations Officer, I cannot guarantee the safety of this station if a Dominion fleet should attack. SISKO Your concerns are noted, commander. KIRA What's Starfleet thinking? They must've given you a reason for denying your request. SISKO They did. KIRA And? SISKO And I'm not at liberty to discuss it. Let's just say Starfleet's resources will be needed elsewhere. KIRA What's more important than defending this station? WORF That's not for us to decide. What are our orders, captain? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 17B. 14A CONTINUED: (2) SISKO Deploy the minefield and prepare for a Dominion attack. KIRA And when the attack comes? SISKO We're to defend this station until all the mines are in position and the field has been activated. WORF The Defiant will be unable to cloak or raise shields while deploying the mines. She will be an easy target. SISKO Then it will be up to DS9 to defend her. If the Dominion wants to stop the Defiant, they'll have to come through us. And as they each consider the task that lies ahead, we... CUT TO: 15 INT. SECURITY OFFICE Kira ENTERS Odo's office. KIRA You wanted to see me, Constable. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 18. 15 CONTINUED: They're both still uneasy around each other. ODO Major, I'd like your permission to terminate all outgoing subspace communications. KIRA You think that's necessary? ODO This is no time for security leaks. I've prepared a number of false messages we can transmit at random intervals so there won't be any noticeable drop in our outgoing subspace traffic. KIRA I'll see what I can do. ODO I'd appreciate that. Kira turns to go. ODO Major... there's something you ought to know. Kira looks back. KIRA What's that? ODO I've been thinking... about asking you to dinner. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 19. 15 CONTINUED: (2) KIRA I've been expecting something like that. ODO I could tell. You've looked a little uncomfortable around me lately. KIRA You've looked a little uncomfortable yourself. ODO That's why I wanted you to know... I'm not going to do it. No dinner invitations. No flowers. No attempts to change the nature of our relationship. Until the current crisis has passed, we both need our minds to be clear, free of unnecessary distractions. Kira's pleasantly surprised by Odo's de-escalation of their relationship. KIRA That's probably a good idea. She relaxes a little. KIRA So, for now, all we have to concern ourselves with is deploying the minefield, maintaining station security and preparing ourselves for a possible invasion. ODO I don't know about you, but I feel more comfortable already. And as they share a mutual smile, we... CUT TO: DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 20-21. 16 thru OMITTED 17 18 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) The Defiant laying mines in the vicinity of the wormhole entrance. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's log, Stardate 50975.2. Five days until the next Dominion convoy. The mining of the wormhole is proceeding as scheduled. But I don't think any of us will rest easy until the work's complete. 19 INT. PROMENADE - SECOND LEVEL Sisko's standing at the window, looking in the direction of the Defiant, though all he can see is an occasional glow from it's impulse engines. Bashir joins him. BASHIR They're still at it? SISKO Three days and no end in sight. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 22. 19 CONTINUED: BASHIR Watching the glow of the Defiant's impulse engines won't make things go any faster. SISKO I know. (smiles) But I can't help myself. KIRA'S COM VOICE Ops to Captain Sisko. SISKO Go ahead. KIRA'S COM VOICE A Dominion ship has just left Cardassian space. It's headed for the station. Sisko and Bashir exchange a look. So much for secrecy. SISKO On my way. 19A EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) (STOCK) A Jem'Hadar Battleship approaches the station. 20 INT. WARDROOM Sisko ENTERS the Wardroom, escorted by three Federation Security Officers. WEYOUN, the Dominion's chief administrator for the Alpha Quadrant, is waiting for him, guarded by a single Jem'Hadar. Weyoun has dropped his mask of smiling pleasantness. He's here to deliver an ultimatum. SISKO What can I do for you, Weyoun? WEYOUN Captain Sisko... I'll make this brief. we know all about the minefield. SISKO I assumed you'd find out sooner or later. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT TWO 22A. 20 CONTINUED: WEYOUN As I see it, you have two choices. Either remove the mines... or we will take this station from you... and remove them ourselves. And as Sisko meets Weyoun's challenge with a cold stare, we... FADE OUT. END OF ACT TWO DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 23. ACT THREE FADE IN: 21 INT. WARDROOM - CONTINUOUS Weyoun awaits Sisko's response. SISKO I appreciate your directness. Now let me be direct with you. The mines stay. I will not allow any more Dominion reinforcements through the wormhole. WEYOUN (incensed) You will not allow? SISKO (softly) You heard me. There's a beat, as Weyoun glares at Sisko. Then, in a heartbeat, his whole demeanor changes. Suddenly, he's the old Weyoun, his aggressiveness once again covered by a mask of reasonableness and sincerity. WEYOUN I can see how that might be your first reaction. But you and I are reasonable men. And surely reasonable men can come to some sort of mutually acceptable compromise. SISKO I didn't think the Dominion believed in compromise. WEYOUN It saddens me to see how deeply you misunderstand us. All the Dominion wants is to peacefully co- exist with its neighbors. SISKO Then why the continued military buildup? Why the weekly convoys of troops and ships from the Gamma Quadrant? WEYOUN (somewhat embarrassed) It's the Cardassians. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 24. 21 CONTINUED: WEYOUN (Cont'd) Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased to call them allies, but as you know, they've just been though a terrible war with the Klingons. I'm afraid it's left them somewhat... jittery. So they're understandably concerned with insuring the sovereignty of their borders. And since they're now members of the Dominion, their concerns have become our concerns. SISKO I would think by now you have more than enough ships to defend Cardassia. WEYOUN You may think that, and I may think that, but the Cardassians... SISKO I know. They're jittery. WEYOUN You see our dilemma. SISKO I'm beginning to. Weyoun pauses to think. He really wants to work something out. Then he gets an idea. WEYOUN What if we agreed to limit our convoys to cargo ships, construction units... civilian aid? Things that'll help them get their economy back on its feet. Did you know that when we arrived, children were starving on Cardassia Prime? It was heartbreaking. SISKO (playing along) I had no idea things were so bad. WEYOUN The Cardassians are a very proud people. They don't want to admit to outsiders how dire their situation really is. (a beat) So are we agreed? You remove the mines and we restrict our convoys to medical and economic assistance. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 25. 21 CONTINUED: (2) SISKO That sounds reasonable. Of course, I'll have to discuss it first with Starfleet. WEYOUN I'm sure they'll do whatever Benjamin Sisko recommends. (smiles) For my part, I will personally speak with the Founders to secure our end of the bargain. SISKO What about Gul Dukat? WEYOUN Oh... he'll be furious... at first. But we've developed a fine working relationship. And I'm sure I can help him see the wisdom of our decision. SISKO I'll leave it in your capable hands. WEYOUN You won't be disappointed. (smiles) This is a momentous day. You and I have just taken the first step toward insuring peace between our peoples. And off Weyoun's beneficent look, we... CUT TO: 22 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Close on Sisko as he paces around the office. SISKO They're going to attack. BASHIR (to Sisko) Are you sure? SISKO I'm positive. The moment I said we weren't going to remove the mines, we both knew there'd be war. Everything else was just words. An attempt to lull the other side into a false sense of security. I didn't buy it, and I'm sure Weyoun didn't either. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV,.04/24/97 - ACT THREE 26. 23 NEW ANGLE To reveal Kira, Bashir, Worf and MARTOK listening to Sisko's update. The mood is tense. Everyone is on their feet awaiting orders. WORF How soon? SISKO As soon as they can get their fleet here from Cardassia. I'd say as early as tomorrow. Sisko turns to a monitor. 24 ANGLE ON THE MONITOR (OPTICAL) To reveal Dax on the Bridge of the Defiant. SISKO Which means we have to finish the minefield. Today. DAX We need more time. SISKO You don't have it. DAX We'll do all we can. Dax out. The monitor deactivates. 25 ANGLE ON SISKO As he turns to Martok. SISKO General, I want you to take your ship and patrol the border. At the first sight of Dominion ships... MARTOK I will sound the alarm. SISKO But don't engage the enemy. Get back to the station as quickly as you can. We're going to need you here. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 27. 25 CONTINUED: MARTOK Fighting them at the border or fighting them at the station... it makes no difference to me. Martok nods and EXITS. Bashir looks troubled. He was still hoping for a peaceful solution. BASHIR I don't suppose Starfleet could be persuaded to send us a few more ships... say fifty? SISKO I'm afraid not, doctor. We're on our own. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 28. 25 CONTINUED: (2) BASHIR In that case, I'd better get the Infirmary ready. Bashir EXITS and Sisko turns to Worf. SISKO Mister Worf, see to the weapons array and issue combat assignments. Worf nods and EXITS. Sisko turns to Kira. SISKO Major... KIRA (anticipating) I'll contact the Bajoran Militia. They might be able to spare some ships. She also starts to leave, but Sisko stops her. SISKO Forget the Militia. I need you to contact the Council of Ministers. Tell them I'd like to meet with them immediately. KIRA As a Starfleet captain or as the Emissary of the Prophets? SISKO Both. KIRA That'll get their attention. SISKO You know that non-aggression pact that the Dominion offered Bajor a few weeks ago? KIRA (with distaste) They're still debating it in the Council of Ministers, but it'll never pass... SISKO It will pass if the Emissary endorses it. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 29. 25 CONTINUED: (3) KIRA (surprised) You want Bajor to sign a treaty with the Dominion? Why? SISKO When I came here, my orders were to protect Bajor and help your people rebuild from the Occupation. KIRA We succeeded. SISKO And I refuse to see everything we've accomplished torn down again. (a beat) The sad truth is, if there's a war, the Federation can't guarantee Bajor's safety. Which means Bajor has to be kept out of the fighting. (a beat) I don't like this any more than you do, major, but it's Bajor's only chance for survival. This is tough for Kira to accept, but finally she nods in agreement. 26 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) Re-establishing. There're several Bajoran cargo ships docked at the station. SISKO (V.O.) Captain's log, Supplemental: Bajor has signed the non-aggression pact with the Dominion. All Bajoran personnel have been ordered to evacuate the station. 27 INT. PROMENADE The evacuation is under way. Bajorans, both military and civilian, are streaming into the airlocks. SISKO (V.O.) (continuing) As someone once said, "These are the times that try men's souls." DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 29A. 27 CONTINUED: We move in on Ziyal and Garak, who are walking together. ZIYAL You're sure you won't come with me? GARAK I don't think I'd be very welcome on Bajor. ZIYAL I'm not going to be very popular there, either. GARAK My dear, you are half-Bajoran. So at least half of you will be accepted. Besides, I'm sure Major Kira's friends will take good care of you. ZIYAL But what's going to happen to you? GARAK, Let me tell you a story. I once knew a Cardassian, a dashing, handsome young man with a promising career. And then one day, through no fault of his own, he found himself exiled and alone, with nowhere to turn. But did he give up? No. Instead he struck upon a brilliant plan. Rather than fleeing for the rest of his life, he sought shelter in the one place no one expected him to go. In a stronghold of his people's most hated enemies. There, surrounded by hostile strangers, he built a life. And there, against all odds, against the merciless logic of the Universe itself, he thrived. ZIYAL (tongue in cheek) By becoming the greatest tailor in the Galaxy. GARAK The moral, my dear, is to never underestimate my gift for survival. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 30. 27 CONTINUED: (2) She gives him a kiss, looks at him as if memorizing his features, then turns and leaves without another word. Once she's gone, Garak allows a moment of remorse at their parting, then steels himself. Time to switch into survival mode again. 28 INT. WARDROOM Sisko is presiding at the wedding of Leeta and Rom. Quark, Nog and a dabo girl are the only guests. It's a hurried ceremony. Leeta's not even in a wedding dress. She's just got on her Sunday best. SISKO Boray pree hadokee. Tolata impara boresh. Preeya Rom, Preeya Leeta, abrem varo atel. (smiles) You may kiss the bride. Rom and Leeta kiss. NOG (with enthusiasm) Congratulations, Father! (uncertain) Moogie. LEETA Thank you, Nog. Leeta grabs hold of Nog and hugs him. SISKO If you'll excuse me, I'm afraid I have business to attend to. Sisko EXITS. Quark looks disgruntled. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 31. 28 CONTINUED: QUARK Well, that was the most pathetic excuse for a wedding ceremony I have ever seen. No bridal auction, no latinum dances, and the bride was severely overdressed. ROM Nevertheless, you're very happy for us, aren't you, Brother? QUARK Overjoyed. (to the dabo girl) I give it two months. He EXITS along with the dabo girl. Leeta goes to kiss Rom again. LEETA Oh, Rom. But Rom stops her in mid-embrace. ROM No time for that. Nog, are Leeta's bags packed? NOG They're already on the shuttle. This is all news to Leeta. LEETA You mean, we're leaving? ROM No. You're leaving. Rom starts leading Leeta toward the door. ROM First Minister Shakaar was very clear. All Bajorans must leave the station for their own safety. LEETA But what about you? ROM My job is here. With Chief O'Brien. LEETA Then I'm not going either. Rom is in awe. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 32. 28 CONTINUED: (2) ROM (proudly) You see that, Nog. We've barely finished saying our vows and we're already having our first fight. We're really married. (to Leeta) You've got to go, Leeta. The problems of two newlyweds are but a small thread in the tapestry of galactic events. You might not understand that today, or even tomorrow. But someday you will. So get on that shuttle. And don't look back. (trying not to cry) Nog. Take your Moogie to the docking ring. Nog takes Leeta by the arm and guides her to the door. NOG (sincere) Nice speech, Dad. They EXIT. ROM (wistful) I thought so. 29 INT. CAPTAIN'S OFFICE Sisko is pacing behind his desk. SISKO Computer, what's the status of program Sisko One-Nine-Seven? COMPUTER VOICE All necessary modifications have been completed. Program Sisko One- Nine-Seven is ready for implementation on your command. NOG'S COM VOICE Ops to Captain Sisko. Sir, we're receiving a message from the Cardassian border. It's General Martok. Sisko EXITS into... DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 33. 30 INT. Martok's on the bridge of his bird of prey. MARTOK Captain, we just detected a large force of Dominion ships headed your way. They should be there within the hou -- Just then, the screen goes to static. WORF Someone's jamming his transmission. Suddenly, the static clears and we are looking at GUL DUKAT, on the Bridge of a Dominion ship. DAMAR is at the helm pushing buttons as he breaks into the bird of prey's signal. Weyoun stands nearby, along with a number of Jem'Hadar. DAMAR (on viewscreen, to Dukat) Contact established. Dukat turns toward camera. DUKAT (on viewscreen) Ahh, Captain Sisko. I don't suppose you'd like to surrender and avoid unnecessary bloodshed. SISKO Absolutely not. DUKAT (smiles) I was hoping you'd say that. And with that, Dukat cuts off his transmission. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT THREE 34. 32 CLOSE ON SISKO As he realizes the battle will soon be joined. SISKO Battle stations. FADE OUT. Worf is at his tactical station, Nog is at Engineering. Sisko is at the Ops table and supernumeraries man the other stations. SISKO How much longer? Worf checks his readouts. WORF The Dominion fleet should be in weapons range in twenty minutes. SISKO Are all the Bajorans off the station? NOG The last transport just left. SISKO Let's hope the Dominion honors the non-aggression pact. (a beat) Cadet, put me through to the Defiant. NOG Yes, Sir. (tapping his panel) On screen. 34 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE (OPTICAL) Dax is in the Captain's Chair. She turns toward the viewscreen as Sisko appears. (Intercut as necessary with Ops.) DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 36. 34 CONTINUED: DAX Benjamin, I know what you're going to say... but we've got at least another hour of work before we can activate the minefield. SISKO You don't have an hour, old man. The Dominion will be here in less than twenty minutes, and you're going to be a sitting duck. DAX Then I hope you can buy us some more time. Dax out. Dax hits a button on the Captain's panel. DAX Dax to O'Brien. 35 INT. DEFIANT - LAUNCH BAY This is a redress of the Mess Hall. Long racks of mines line the walls. O'Brien and his crew are hard at work preparing the mines. O'BRIEN (to com) I know, I know. Work faster. 36 INT. INFIRMARY Jake hands a medkit to a field medic. Besides, my father won't let me stay in Ops and I promised the Federation News Service a firsthand account of the battle. BASHIR You'll get it. (a beat) Just remember, Bashir is spelled with an "I." 37 INT. PROMENADE Federation troops armed with phaser rifles take up positions around the Promenade. Odo is standing at the railing of the Second Level, calmly watching the activity. Garak joins him. GARAK I must say, Constable, I admire your composure. You're an island of tranquility in a sea of chaos. ODO What I am... is useless. My entire staff has been evacuated to Bajor. GARAK I'm not feeling too useful myself, at the moment. If it'd make you feel any better, you could always deputize me. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 37A. 37 CONTINUED: ODO Oh, I'm sure if the Jem'Hadar board the station, you'll make yourself useful. Garak nods. He most certainly will. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 38. 37 CONTINUED: (2) GARAK It's ironic. When the Klingons attacked this station, Gul Dukat and I fought side-by-side. At one point, when he was struggling with a Klingon, he turned his back to me, and I have to admit, for a moment, he made a very tempting target. ODO You'd shoot a man in the back? GARAK That's the safest way, isn't it? (back on the subject) But then I thought, "I can't fight all these Klingons by myself." So I let him live. ODO And now you regret it. GARAK My dear Constable, before this day is over, everyone on this station is going to regret it. 38 INT. DOCKING RING CORRIDOR Rom is trying to work at an open panel while Quark pesters him. QUARK Rom, I always said you were an idiot, but I never believed it more than I do at this moment. ROM Brother, if you want to insult me, it's going to have to wait 'til later. I'm busy. QUARK Busy doing what? ROM Preparing perimeter defenses for the attack. QUARK There're dozens of engineers who could be doing that. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 39. 38 CONTINUED: QUARK (Cont'd) Starfleet engineers. Hew-mons. You should be on Bajor with your new wife. ROM That's what Leeta said. QUARK Well, she's right. This isn't your fight. ROM It's not your fight either, but I don't see you leaving. QUARK I have to look out for my bar. ROM And I have to look out for you. That catches Quark totally by surprise. QUARK Me? ROM You're my brother. Whatever happens, we belong together. QUARK (with affection) Like I said, you're an idiot. Quark leans over and kisses his brother on the back of the head, then EXITS. Rom smiles to himself and continues his work. 39 INT. OPS (OPTICAL) Sisko talks to Martok, who's on the viewscreen. KIRA Captain, as a major in the Bajoran Militia, I must officially protest Starfleet's refusal to turn over this station to my government. SISKO Your protest is duly noted. KIRA Good. Damar's at the helm. The rest of the crew is Jem'Hadar. DAMAR Weapons range in one minute. DUKAT I've been waiting for this moment for five years. DAMAR First, we reclaim Terok Nor, and then... on to Bajor. WEYOUN Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Or must I remind you that the Dominion just signed a non- aggression pact with Bajor? DUKAT The Dominion might've. But I never did. WEYOUN The Dominion will honor its treaty. And as a member of the Dominion, you will honor it as well. Dukat weighs his options, and then with some reluctance... DUKAT Where the Dominion leads, I will follow. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 42. 44 CONTINUED: WEYOUN I never doubted it. Damar isn't happy about this either, but there're more pressing matters at hand. SPACE (OPTICAL) The station fires its photon torpedoes at the Dominion ships. They're destroyed. 48 INT. JEM'HADAR BATTLESHIP Damar reacts in surprise to the result of this first exchange of fire. DAMAR Sir, the station's shields are holding. Weyoun's even more surprised. WEYOUN Impossible. Federation shields have always proven useless against our weapons. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 43. 48 CONTINUED: DUKAT I've found it wise never to underestimate the Federation's technical skill or Captain Sisko's resourcefulness. (to Damar) Bring us around for another pass. 49 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) The battle continues. The station is hammered, but several more Jem'Hadar ships are destroyed by the devastating fire from Deep Space Nine. 50 OMITTED 51 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE Dax looks worried. DAX (to com) Chief? One of the Dominion ships explodes and the others are forced to veer off. 59 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE (OPTICAL) Martok appears on the viewscreen. MARTOK You may continue your work, commander. I will handle the Jem'Hadar. DAX Who says there's never a Klingon around when you need one? 60 INT. OPS The station takes another hit. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 45. 60 CONTINUED: NOG Shields at thirty-five percent. KIRA They're preparing for another attack. SISKO Mister Worf, make every shot count. 61 INT. JEM'HADAR BATTLESHIP Dukat knows he's getting close to the kill. DUKAT Attack wings and batteries, concentrate your fire on Section Seventeen of the outer docking ring. We have to penetrate their shields. 62 EXT. SPACE - DEEP SPACE NINE (OPTICAL) The Jem'Hadar ships hit the same section of the docking ring over and over again. Several of the attackers are destroyed, but finally, there's a huge explosion on the surface of the docking ring. 63 INT. OPS Nog fights the panic he's feeling. The station's getting rocked pretty hard. NOG We've lost main power to the shields. WORF Switching to auxiliary power. But I don't know how long it'll hold. SPACE (OPTICAL) As the Defiant rockets away from the minefield, the field activates and for a second we see a thousand mines wink on and then CLOAK. 66A INT. JEM'HADAR BATTLESHIP Dukat, Weyoun and Damar react to the activation of the minefield. DAMAR Sir, the minefield-- DUKAT (cutting him off) I have eyes, Damar. WEYOUN This isn't turning out quite the way I'd planned. DUKAT A minor setback. Once we take the station, we'll be able to dismantle the minefield without interference. WEYOUN Let's both hope your confidence is justified. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FOUR 46A. 66A CONTINUED: DUKAT Damar, signal the reserves to prepare for a final assault. Damar taps in the orders. 67 INT. OPS As before. KIRA The Dominion fleet's regrouping and I'm detecting another wave of enemy ships entering Bajoran space. WORF What are your orders, Captain? 68 CLOSE ON SISKO As he weighs his options. He knew this was coming, but that doesn't make it any easier. SISKO We've done all we can here. Worf turns to see Dax, coming the opposite direction of the rest of the traffic. WORF Jadzia. You should be on the Defiant. DAX I heard you're not coming with us. That you've been assigned to Martok's ship. Red Alert continues to sound. WORF It might be some time before we see each other again. DAX Worf, we might never see each other again. WORF This is war. We must put our personal feelings aside. Focus on the task at hand. DAX I've been through my share of wars. I know what I have to do. But before you leave, I just want you to know that the answer is "yes." WORF Yes? Yes to what? DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FIVE 48. 69 CONTINUED: DAX Yes, I will marry you. Worf looks at her in surprise. DAX That's what you've wanted from the very beginning, isn't it? Worf smiles as he sees that Dax is serious. WORF It is. DAX Then as soon as this is over, we'll get married. (smiles) And if that doesn't give you a reason to survive, I don't know what will. Dax sniffs Worf, then nips his ear and EXITS. Worf watches her go and smiles. He's a lucky man. CUT TO: 70 INT. PROMENADE Sisko is addressing everyone who's not leaving the station. This includes Kira, Odo, Quark, Rom, Morn, a few shopkeepers, dabo girls and Ferengi waiters. SISKO When I first took command of this post, all I wanted was to be somewhere else. Anywhere but here. But now, five years later, this station has become my home. And you've become my family. Leaving this place, leaving you, is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. 71 OMITTED 72 INT. Dax and Nog react with surprise. 73 INT. PROMENADE The assembled listeners react with new hope. SISKO Our sacrifices made that victory possible. (a beat) But no victory could make this moment any easier for me. And I promise, I will not rest until I stand with you again. Here. In this place. Where I belong. Kira and Odo react to the speech. They know Sisko keeps his promises. 74 OMITTED 75 INT. PROMENADE (OPTICAL) Sisko hits his combadge. SISKO Sisko to Defiant. One to beam aboard. Sisko DEMATERIALIZES. 76 INT. DAX'S COM VOICE Dax to Sisko. The Dominion fleet is coming around for another attack. SISKO (to com) Release docking clamps. Prepare for departure. 77 EXT. SPACE (OPTICAL) A new wave of Jem'Hadar ships approach the station. The Defiant and Martok's ship fly through the pylons, firing at the attacking fleet. The Dominion ships return fire, but the Defiant and the Bird of Prey CLOAK and fade from view... 78 INT. OPS (OPTICAL) Kira and Odo ENTER Ops. The station shakes. Odo checks a panel. ODO The Defiant's away. KIRA Signal the Dominion fleet. Tell them the Bajoran government welcomes them to Deep Space Nine. ODO (beat) Message acknowledged. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FIVE 50A. 78 CONTINUED: KIRA Good. That's the last message this station will be putting out for a while. QUARK'S Quark's is on emergency power. MORN is the only customer in the bar. Quark shouts orders to his waiters. As they carry out crate after crate of beverages. QUARK I don't want to see a drop of root beer left in this place. Break out the kanar and find me some yamok sauce. He turns and bumps into Rom, who is no longer dressed in his maintenance outfit. ROM Rom, Assistant Manager for Policy and Clientele. Reporting for work, Brother. QUARK What, you think you can just walk back in here and get your old job back? ROM (sotto voce) Actually, I'm a spy working for Starfleet. But don't tell anyone. QUARK (to himself) The Federation is more desperate than I thought. But Quark's not about to blow his brother's cover. QUARK (for all to hear) I knew one day you'd come crawling back to me. Now get to work. DEEP SPACE NINE: "Call to Arms" - REV. 04/24/97 - ACT FIVE 52. 79 CONTINUED: ROM Yes, Brother. 80 NEW ANGLE We follow Rom as he heads for the storeroom. But before he gets too far, he sees a familiar face coming out of the shadows. Rom can't believe what he's seeing. ROM Jake? It's Jake all right, looking more serious and adult than we've ever seen him. ROM Aren't you supposed to be on the Defiant? JAKE I changed my mind. There's a war going on and I'm a reporter. This is where I belong. ROM But you're not safe here. JAKE I'm probably safer here than any of you. The Dominion knows I'm the Emissary's son. If they hurt me, they risk alienating their new "friends" the Bajorans. ROM I hope you're right. JAKE So do I. 81 INT. DEFIANT - BRIDGE We're still in cloak. Dax is at the helm. NOG And then we make the Dominion sorry they ever set foot in the Alpha Quadrant. SISKO Cadet, you took the words right out of my mouth. 82 INT. PROMENADE Jem'Hadar troops physically force open the airlocks, then form up ranks to make way for Dukat, Damar, and Weyoun as the step onto the Promenade. DAMAR This is a great victory for Cardassia... DUKAT (magnanimous) And the Dominion. WEYOUN Over fifty ships lost. Our spacedocks on Torros Three destroyed. A victory perhaps. But a costly one. DUKAT We'll discuss the repercussions later. Right now, I intend to enjoy this moment. As they walk down the Promenade, they're met by Kira, Quark and Odo. WEYOUN (to Odo) Founder, we are honored by your decision to remain with us. ODO I'm not here as a Founder. I'm the station's Security Chief. WEYOUN Whatever you say. Nevertheless, having a god walk amongst us is most gratifying. DUKAT (to Odo) I agree. You, me, the major, together again... It should be most interesting. (smiles) Now if you'll excuse me. I'll be in my office. 83 INT. OPS Jem'Hadar troops take up positions around the room as Dukat and Weyoun ENTER. WEYOUN It would appear Captain Sisko was most efficient in disabling the station. WEYOUN I assume Captain Sisko removed or destroyed everything of value. Dukat notices something sitting on the table. DUKAT Not everything.
